Got Austin FC Tickets You Won’t Be Using?

I’ve seen some people on social media saying they won’t be making it to future Austin FC games this season for a variety of reasons… COVID-19 concerns, too much going on, fair-weather fans, etc.

Whatever the reason, if you have Austin FC tickets that you won’t be using, please sell or give them away to people who do want to be there.

There are many kids and adults who would love to make it to a match or two.

This situation takes me back 25 years to a similar circumstance when I was living in the NYC area. It was during one of the typical, horrible seasons for the New York Jets (they went 1-15 that season) and the majority of fans were not attending the games by December.

I was a big brother in Big Brothers/Big Sisters of New York City at the time, and I was talking to my little brother about it, and he said how much he wished he could go to a pro sports game.

I didn’t have the means to bring him to an NFL game or any other sport at the time, but I had an idea.

Maybe I could connect the people with unused tickets to people who wanted to go to games. Win-Win.

So, I wrote a letter to the editor of the New York Daily News…

There were 55,985 no-shows for the Jets-Oilers game. What a selfish waste! Hey, Jets season ticket holders: if you’re not going to use ’em, why not get into the holiday spirit and send them to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of New York City? The address is 223 E. 30th St., New York, NY 10016. My little brother, Marquis, and I would love to see Gang Green battle the Eagles or Dolphins this month.

My letter was the featured letter in the paper shortly after. And then came a call from Big Brothers/Big Sisters asking what I had done, because they were being deluged with tickets for every team in the NYC area, as well as cash from people who wanted to help kids see games.

It was an amazing outpouring of sports love and any littles and bigs that wanted to see games now had a variety of tickets to choose from – they let Marquis and I pick first and I got to take him in nice tickets to see the Jets, Knicks, Rangers, etc.

Don’t let your tickets go to waste – reach out in your neighborhood, local soccer league, Los Verdes, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas, etc. Help more people catch verde fever.
