Foot golf in Austin at the Harvey Penick Golf Campus

I only found out a couple of years ago that we have an awesome footgolf course in Austin – it’s at the Harvey Penick Golf Campus (5501 Ed Bluestein Blvd, Austin, TX 78723).

If you’re not familiar with footgolf, it is a sport that combines elements of soccer and golf.

Footgolf uses the basic rules of regular golf with the bunkers, hazards, 18 holes, etc., but players kick a soccer ball and try to sink it in a 21-inch cup in as few strokes as possible.

The footgolf course at the Harvey Penick Golf Campus opened in summer 2014 and is accredited by the American Footgolf League (AFGL) – the sport’s governing body in the U.S.

Footgolf began in Europe back in 2008 and came to the U.S. in 2011. Since then, over 190 courses in 36 states have been registered by the AFGL.

Visit the Harvey Penick Golf Campus site to book a tee time.

Just like regular golf, a beer or two is nice on hot days out on the course.

Bring your own soccer ball (size five is recommended for adults) and plan for two hours for your pace of play. Dress in golf or active wear and either indoor soccer shoes or tennis shoes. Cleats and bare feet are not permitted.

I made the mistake my first time out of trying to kill the ball at the start of each hole. After 18 holes my right glutes were killing me (this lasted for days), so I switched to kicking with my left foot and toned it down for the next 18 holes.

Don’t be like me – ease into it, listen to your body, and have fun.
