On May 1, 2018, there was an “MLS2ATX Community Engagement Meeting” at the Pond Hockey Club in Austin for people in Austin who were for or against bringing an MLS team to town to ask questions and get information.
Among those in attendance were a bunch of supporters of the future Austin FC who were active on Twitter. Many of us hadn’t met before and some of us got together for beers after the meeting at Austin Beerworks, which was next door.
We shared a photo of six of us hanging out on Twitter and some antagonists from Columbus branded us as the Hipster 6 because they seemed to truly believe that we were the only people who wanted Major League Soccer in Austin.
Of course, when those season-ticket deposits started rolling in it was very clear that Austin was a feverish soccer town, not that this was news to the locals.
Much to the consternation of Columbus trolls, we embraced the name and had shirts printed up to wear at events around the city, including an important meeting at city hall that went well into the next morning.
I look forward to wearing my Hipster 6 shirt to a match or two at our stadium next spring.
