Austin FC winger Jayden Nelson has officially secured his spot on Canada’s Men’s National Team roster for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026.

Nelson’s path to the final 26-man roster took a dramatic turn during the preparation phase. Though initially left out of Head Coach Jesse Marsch’s first roster announcement following a pre-tournament training camp in Charlotte, North Carolina, Nelson earned an unexpected lifeline. Following an unfortunate ACL injury to Tigres UANL midfielder Marcelo Flores during the Concacaf Champions Cup final, Marsch turned back to Nelson to round out his attacking core.
Nelson ultimately forced his way into the squad with a standout performance on the pitch, sealing his inclusion by coming off the bench to score a definitive 91st-minute goal in Canada’s 2-0 friendly victory over Uzbekistan at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium.
The dynamic 23-year-old winger, who arrived in Austin ahead of the 2026 MLS season, has enjoyed a productive stretch with the Verde & Black, contributing two goals across his first stretch of matches for the club. On the international stage, Nelson has already built a solid resume with over a dozen appearances for Les Rouges, highlighted by previous goals against Cuba in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup and Barbados in friendly action.
Co-hosting the prestigious tournament, Canada has been drawn into Group B alongside Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar, and Switzerland. Their World Cup journey begins on home soil on June 12 at BMO Field in Toronto, followed by back-to-back group stage fixtures at BC Place in Vancouver on June 18 and June 24.
Austin soccer fans looking to back the club’s international representative can watch Canada’s opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Austin Soccer Celebration. The club will be hosting a free, family-friendly outdoor watch party at Auditorium Shores in downtown Austin, featuring a large screen, a beer garden, and local food vendors. Advanced registration is required to attend.
